What Does it Mean to "Be a Memory Maker"? - Interview with Thomas C. Rector (Transcript)
Thomas C. Rector:
When I say, “Be a Memory Maker”, that is the person absorbing the concept of BSC (BioSocial Cognition) and "Make a Difference" is the reason why they are willing to shift their paradigm to Be a Memory Maker.
And the Memory Maker is the doing-ness.
That's the bottom line doing-ness of BSC, which is:
Everybody we touch, everybody we connect to, interface with, is an opportunity to Be a Memory Maker.
Everything. Every time. All the time.
So what does that say? It says that BSC shows them a way of the doing-ness of it, gives them an understanding of how it can be done. Gives them an understanding of why it is done.
It gives them an understanding that it isn't somebody's opinion and "To Make a Difference" insinuates improvement, betterment, having purpose. It matters.
So testing that is - the group of people that I have presented to and trained to are typically adults that are trying to help youth be more successful, to be more functional, to overcome, and those people are trying to make a difference.
And so when I speak to that particular group, then I have coined the words Memory Makers.
We Are Memory Makers. That's our job.
And that has resonated over and over and over again with people. You see them writing that down, “Ah!”, writing it down.
The phrase is also a grounding thing of not getting lost in the minutia, not getting caught up in all the rules or the technical data.
It is all about making a memory and all these other things are tasks and techniques and details.
But it's also grounding for the person that this is what I'm doing, and then the rest of stuff is tools to be able to accomplish that.
