Thomas C. Rector, founder of Accrescent Institute, will be presenting  two workshops crafted to address the unique challenges and needs of foster, adoptive, and kinship families, as well as the advocates and professionals who support them.  These sessions recognize the complex layers of trauma, loss, and adjustment that often accompany these families' journeys.

By providing practical tools and evidence-based strategies, the workshops aim to empower parents and caregivers with the knowledge and skills necessary to create safe, nurturing, and healing environments for children impacted by trauma.  Whether you're a parent seeking to understand your child's behaviors or an advocate looking to enhance your support techniques, these workshops offer valuable insights and resources to promote positive growth, well-being, and family connection.

Trust in the Force: Building Strong Bonds with Teens

Session 2A

Saturday, May 3

9:00am - 10:30am

Why do teens make the choices they do? What could they possibly be thinking? How can we guide them into adulthood with the tools they need to lead healthy, productive lives?

Many parents and caregivers worry about maintaining a strong connection with their teens, especially as independence grows and communication becomes more challenging.

In this interactive session, we’ll explore the development, neuroscience, and internal and external factors that impact teen choices and behavior…

So that you can better understand where your teen is coming from, why they are making the choices they are making.

Through Building Strong Bonds with Teens training, you’ll also gain a methodology for cultivating a positive, productive relationship with your teen. And a tool for open communication and reaching agreements through the teen years and beyond.

The Force of Education: Enhancing IEP Outcomes

Session 2B

Saturday, May 3

10:45am - 12:15pm

Is your child's IEP meeting just another mandatory appointment, or could it be a powerful opportunity for collaboration?  For families of trauma-impacted children, navigating the IEP process can feel especially daunting.  This interactive workshop will explore how to transform IEP meetings into collaborative sessions that truly benefit your child.

Participants will gain practical tools and strategies for identifying the factors that influence a child's behavior and learning outcomes.  We'll examine the interactive dynamics of various stimuli within the learning environment and how they impact a child's progress.  Leave this session with a new methodology for maximizing the collective expertise of the IEP team, ultimately leading to a more effective and supportive plan for your child's success.
